This post started with me just posting a tune that Im planning on beating up this summer. And it turned into a Mojito love fest….see below.
Unfortunately the 25 and under in this city weren’t lucky enough to catch the old Mojito at 20th and Market but man, was that party a game changer. Walking up to it, you could hear the house music from down the street (thats why it eventually got the axe) and I remember always getting really excited as soon as I realized it was Saturday and it was a perfect summer night in the middle of June and it was definitely about to go the fuck down. Pretty shortly after hearing the first echos of the music from around the bend you would turn that corner off of Market Street into that “cove” of sorts where Marathon sat and the first 2 things you would see was that huge ass water fountain and about 200 people waiting in queue to get in. Luckily I made friends family with Tommy, Rob, and Sarah From PaperStreet so I would skip that line real quick. Never forgetting to Kiss the former Mojito Door Girl – turned World Famous Porn Star – Jess Stoya on the cheek before i did so.
Then bang, right to that mother fucking dance floor, NO HALF STEPPIN’.
Maybe its because I was pretty young at the time, but it seemed to me that there was never any pretension at this party, there was no drama (as long as you stayed away from Rob & Tommy at the door) it was just smiles everywhere. And I beg you to ask anyone that attended these parties and they will undoubtedly confirm everything Im saying here right now. PaperStreet just did this thing RIGHT. It was like being transported to another time or place or something. Everywhere you looked there were beautiful people. Not in a douchey way at all tho, just really attractive fucking people, all with their own individual style. Smiling, laughing, drinking – whatever. And one thing EVERYONE did at this party was dance. No matter who you were or what you were into Sunday through Monday it didnt matter. It was Saturday night and it was Mojito. You and everyone else around you were there for the same reason, another amazing night dancing under the stars. There was no way you could refuse that energy. Even if you were the dweebiest of dweebs you felt cool as shit just being at this joint. The fact that this party was outside was obviously a huge reason why it was so popular but the music was what really took this thing over the top.
DJs can say what they want about Lucas but he would have that place loosing its shit on the dance floor. Lots of tribal/latin/soulful house jumping off with Xande on the Bongo’s. Cats just ate this shit up. This was Sundae before Sundae was SUNDAE. And Shakedown did theyre thing no doubt, but it wasnt outside like this! And thank god it was outside, cause if it was inside they would have needed an Ambulance to carry people out from dehydration.
Now this is all from my point of view and maybe not everyone felt the same way about this party, but Ive yet to find that person. If there is that person then i dont know, they probably just suck at having fun. Please dont ever introduce him or her to me. Thnx.
But yea, the reason this whole thing started was becuase of that song up top. It reminded me of the party and then I realized Mojito is actually just around the corner again this summer. This Saturday night is the first of the summer actually.
The party has since found a new home at The Moshulu on Delaware ave. A lot of people have felt some sort of way since the move to boat 3 years ago and thats totally understandable. Its a total bummer when you have something so perfect and it just gets uprooted and moved, but thats life folks. Just gotta move on. Gotta keep on truckin’! Lets not forget the facts here though; Your on a massive fucking sailboat gazing at the Ben Franklin on one side and I95 is just blurring past you on the other. You got one of the best House DJs in the city in DJ Dirty working his ass off on the main floor and the back room is just straight vibrations with Brendan cranking out classic after classic to a crowd of people that are just eating everything up like its the last song they will ever hear. Its a wet dream party scenario, as long as you know whats good for you. And right now? Right now were turning the corner on spring just like we turned that corner off of Market st. You hear the beat echoing and you know, Its Saturday night, and Mojito is HERE.
Edit: I wrote this post up at like 4AM last night then when i woke up this afternoon I felt inspired, hit the switch on the turntables and made this mix. The only track on here that was maybe played at Mojito before was the one that i Youtubed up top but I think its pretty close to that Mojito vibe. Lots of drums going on. Hope ya digggg….
